Grassroots Voice Rising: Yeukai Munetsi Wins Youth Impact Award for Championing Women and Community Justice

Yeukai Ottilia Munetsi is redefining what youth leadership looks like in Zimbabwe through fearless storytelling, grassroots activism and an unwavering commitment to empowering young women and marginalized communities.
As the winner of the Youth Impact Award, Yeukai has emerged as a powerful voice for social justice, using journalism and community engagement to amplify stories that are often ignored. Currently serving as Head of Programs and Communications at Nkabazwe Community Radio Station, her work is driven by personal experiences witnessing the exclusion of young women and grassroots leaders from key decision-making spaces.
Determined to change this reality, Yeukai has dedicated her career to creating platforms where women and youth can openly engage on issues affecting their lives, including peacebuilding, climate justice, gender equality and community development.
Through her leadership at Nkabazwe Community Radio Station, she has established safe and empowering spaces for young women to lead critical conversations and challenge harmful societal norms. Her impactful documentaries exposing the devastating effects of mining on women and communities have sparked important discussions around environmental justice and human rights.
Yeukai has also pioneered transformative podcasts such as Fractured Rights, Know Your Rights and Her Voice Her Power, productions that connect local struggles to broader national and international conversations. Through these platforms, she has successfully amplified the voices of women, youth and marginalized communities whose stories are often overlooked.
Beyond broadcasting, Yeukai has made a mark in investigative journalism through her contributions to EnvironPress, where she has uncovered how climate change and mining activities continue to disproportionately affect women in rural communities.
Her grassroots impact stretches across Gweru, Chiwundura and Lower Gwelo, where she has worked closely with hundreds of young women, helping them challenge restrictive social norms, embrace leadership and actively participate in shaping their communities.
Yeukai’s mission remains clear — to restore courage within communities and remind ordinary people that their stories matter and that grassroots-driven solutions can create lasting social transformation.
Academically, Yeukai holds an undergraduate degree in Media and Society Studies from Midlands State University. She has further strengthened her expertise through numerous NGO trainings and international leadership programs, including a youth exchange programme in Kenya facilitated by the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust under the support of Norec.
Her leadership influence extends beyond media work. She currently serves as a Community Resource Monitor Agent under Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development and also holds leadership positions within the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe and the Gweru Young Women’s Forum.
Regionally, Yeukai represents Zimbabwe in the Repository on Non-Violent Social Movements in Uganda and has addressed international platforms, including conferences in Cape Town, where she spoke on issues surrounding the just energy transition and the role of women in mining communities.
For Yeukai, being recognized through the Youth Impact Award represents far more than personal achievement. She views the recognition as a victory for grassroots youth leaders across Zimbabwe whose efforts often go unnoticed despite the critical role they play in transforming communities.
She believes the award has the power to inspire a new generation of young people to continue advocating for justice, equality and meaningful social change.
With her continued focus on expanding community dialogues, strengthening youth participation and uplifting women’s voices, Yeukai remains committed to ensuring that young people are recognized not merely as future leaders, but as active leaders shaping Zimbabwe today.
Her story stands as a powerful reminder that true impact begins within communities — and that when young voices are empowered, lasting change becomes possible.
