A career that began behind the scenes has grown into a journey across acting, cinematography, directing and producing, with Zolile Makeleni, popularly known as Tsotsi, using storytelling to open doors for other African creatives.

His journey into the film and television industry began in 2014 as a boom swinger. What started as an entry-level role became an opportunity to learn the industry from different angles, eventually taking him into acting, cinematography, directing, producing and television presenting. He is also a semi-finalist under the Entertainment Impact Award category.

In a conversation with The List Awards by Identities Media, Zolile reflected on the journey that shaped his career and strengthened his belief in African storytelling.

“Every role became a classroom, every challenge became a lesson, and every opportunity strengthened my belief that African stories deserve to be told by Africans.”

Over the years, Tsotsi has worked on more than 30 television productions and has produced, directed and presented several projects, including Dine with Tsotsi, Drive with Tsotsi, Rockbottom and Isithembu. Through Vhakatsha, he has also used television to showcase Zimbabwe’s tourism, culture, heritage and destinations to a wider audience.

Beyond the productions themselves, Tsotsi measures his contribution by the opportunities created for others. His work has provided platforms for actors, crew members, presenters and emerging creatives to gain experience and develop their careers within the industry.

“My greatest achievement is using my journey to create opportunities for others,” he explained. “I believe success means creating a path that others can walk after you.”

Born in Zambia, raised in Zimbabwe and with South African roots, Tsotsi has built a career that reflects the movement and diversity of African identity. His experiences across the creative industry have strengthened his belief in the power of local stories to connect audiences while creating opportunities for the people who tell them.

Being named a finalist for The List Awards carries particular significance for Tsotsi, whose career has been shaped by humble beginnings, sacrifice, persistence and a willingness to keep learning.

“For me, this recognition is bigger than my name. It represents every young African creative who dreams of turning their passion into a career,” he said.

As he looks towards the future, Tsotsi remains committed to creating, producing, directing and acting while opening more doors for emerging talent. His ambition extends beyond recognition, with a focus on building a creative legacy that can inspire generations to come.

His journey continues to be guided by one central belief: African stories, talent and dreams deserve a place on the global stage.
