Ndangana Transforms Health Realities Through Storytelling

Fadzai Ndangana, a Communications Specialist and Health Reporter at Gweru Provincial Hospital, is using communication, documentaries and writing to make health information easier to understand while giving greater attention to the experiences of communities.

Ndangana has been involved in community-focused health engagement since 2020. She holds a degree in English and Applied Communication, a Master’s in Strategic Communications and a Public Health Certificate, which has strengthened her ability to translate health information into clear public messages.

In a conversation with The List Awards by Identities Media Holdings, Ndangana said her decision to pursue communications was influenced by seeing how complex medical stories could become lost in translation, leaving communities disconnected from the care they need.

“I realised that health data is meaningless without a human voice to carry it,” she said.

Through documentaries and writing, Ndangana said she aims to bridge this gap by humanising health challenges and using storytelling as a tool for advocacy. She believes well-told stories can turn silent struggles into conversations that encourage change within communities.

At Gweru Provincial Hospital, where she serves as a Public Relations Officer, Ndangana has worked on sharing information about hospital services, supporting health awareness initiatives and helping residents access care early. She has also focused on listening to community concerns and ensuring feedback reaches hospital leadership and relevant departments.

Her work includes supporting outreach and participation in health programmes, coordinating announcements and preparing public education materials. She said these efforts have helped strengthen dialogue between the hospital and the community, making healthcare more accessible, responsive and respectful.

Beyond her hospital role, Ndangana has continued to use storytelling to document community experiences. She recently produced Shadows of Epworth, a documentary highlighting health-related realities and community stories. Her work has also earned recognition through awards in health.

Ndangana is a finalist in The List Awards 2026 under the Storyteller/Journalism Impact Award category. She said the recognition represents acknowledgement of her dedication to serving communities through communication and public engagement.

“It validates the work I have been doing at Gweru Provincial Hospital to strengthen trust, share accurate health information, and ensure people feel heard and respected,” she said.

The recognition has motivated Ndangana to continue improving her work as a Communications Specialist and Public Relations Officer, with a focus on turning information into action and contributing to better healthcare outcomes.

Whether she wins or not, she said her focus remains on serving her community through stronger health messaging, community engagement and content that informs and empowers.
