Bruce Moyo transforms community challenges into opportunities

In Ward 22, Nkulumane, Bulawayo, Bruce Mmeli Moyo has made community leadership a practical exercise in creating opportunities and turning local challenges into collective action.

His work spans youth development, entrepreneurship, leadership and community participation, with a particular focus on creating spaces where young people can develop skills, build enterprises and take an active role in shaping their communities.

Through the Ubuntu Network, a youth-led platform he founded, more than 86 young people have received training in leadership, entrepreneurship and digital skills, while 26 youth-led businesses have been supported through capital and market access. His initiatives have also reached more than 300 young women through sanitary-wear programmes.

In a conversation with The List Awards by Identities Media, Bruce traced his commitment to community work to what he witnessed growing up, particularly the challenges faced by young people with talent and potential.

“My work is rooted in what I witnessed growing up: talented young people with potential, but limited by unemployment, poverty, unequal opportunities and systems that often felt distant from ordinary citizens,” he said.

Those experiences shaped his belief that communities should be active participants in developing solutions to the challenges they face. Beyond youth programmes, Bruce has worked with residents and stakeholders on service-delivery concerns, including sewer infrastructure and community safety.

“Leadership is not about being above people; it is about standing with them, listening, creating opportunities and turning local challenges into platforms for collective action,” he explained.

His work has also been strengthened by an academic and leadership background spanning Electrical Engineering and Political Science and Diplomacy. He is a semi-finalist under the Youth Impact Award category. If he is selected as a finalist for The List Awards 2026, it will highlight the importance of community-driven leadership. Rather than viewing the recognition solely as a personal achievement, he sees it as an opportunity to amplify the people and communities behind his work.

“Recognition is not the destination, it is an opportunity to amplify the voices, ideas and potential of people I represent,” he said.

As The List Awards draws closer, Bruce remains focused on the people and communities at the heart of his work. Whatever the outcome on the night, he intends to continue expanding opportunities for young people, strengthening community participation and supporting initiatives that create lasting change.
