Receiving The List Award as the first runner-up in the Sport Impact category was a tremendous honor for Lawrence Kamukapa. It reaffirmed his dedication as a community impact leader and highlighted the value of his efforts in driving positive change through sports. “For my work, it serves as a recognition of the transformative power of sports in nurturing development and inclusion,” he shared, emphasizing how this acknowledgment motivates him to scale his initiatives further.
As a Special Programs Officer at the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC), Lawrence plays a pivotal role in using sport as a tool for community development. His leadership in the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League (CJFDL), which engages over 1,825 young athletes, exemplifies his commitment. The league integrates sports training with life skills, safeguarding, and social inclusion, fostering growth in the youth and refugee communities.
Lawrence believes that this recognition has boosted his credibility, making it easier to gain support from stakeholders and potential partners. “Witnessing the transformation in young lives, particularly their growth in confidence, skills, and resilience, is incredibly fulfilling,” he noted. His work not only inspires young athletes but also strengthens the confidence of stakeholders, encouraging new collaborations.
In addition to his impactful work with CJFDL, Lawrence coordinates the Olympic Values Education Program (OVEP), introducing advanced sports management training and facilitating opportunities for refugee athletes to pursue global competitions, including the Olympics. His initiatives, such as the Safe Sport Summer Festival and Olympic Day Celebration, further demonstrate his commitment to creating inclusive and empowering environments.
Lawrence’s advice for others looking to make a positive difference is straightforward: “Start with a clear vision and a genuine passion for change.” He emphasizes resilience and adaptability, sharing that “collaboration amplifies impact,” and reminds aspiring changemakers to keep the community’s needs at the core of their efforts.
As he continues to refine his strategies and seek innovative approaches, Lawrence remains a leading force in leveraging sport for development, inspiring the next generation of leaders in his community.
